Falling Water

Why is web design important?

American architect Frank Lloyd Wright designed Fallingwater (pictured right) in 1935.

Fallingwater’s esquisite design isn’t the only thing that makes it a special building. If you look closely, you can see that it is actually built over a waterfall! While pictures of Fallingwater are fascinating, engineering and architectural students can tell you the blueprints are even more interesting.

Wright envisioned a seemingly impossible task: building a house over a waterfall. How did he execute that vision? Through careful planning. He drew thorough blueprints, backed up by physics, to ensure his building would stand. The beauty of Fallingwater is not only its aethetics, it is the ingenious engineering and functional design dreamed by Wright before the first brick was laid.

Fallingwater is the physical realization of Frank Lloyd Wright’s planning. Similarly, your website should be designed around a clear set of goals. Well designed websites should not only look good, they should function well. For most small businesses, this means your website is an extension of your overall marketing strategy. Who do you want to reach? How do you want to reach them? What are your customers looking for online? How can you get in front of your customers when they are looking for your services?

Search Engine Marketing

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the process of clearly defining the functional goals of your website. There are a number of steps you can take to ensure search engines find and rank your site.  The following checklist analyzes your website for adherence to industry best practices in four areas: quality content, logical site structure, keyword targeting, and popularity.

Most people don’t go to a website to marvel at its beautiful design. Visitors to your website are looking for high quality content. Unique information on your website will help boost its popularity and search engine ranking. Great content should be built into the static pages of your site at the onset. To continue driving new traffic, you may want to create a blog with regularly scheduled updates.
Frank Lloyd Wright wouldn’t have been much of an architect if he had put the kitchen sink in the bedroom. Likewise, search engines look for logical site structure. Does your site code clearly mark the page as relevant to a particular topic? An optimized website will utilize a “robots.txt” directory to instruct search engines how to read the website in addition to a complete sitemap.
Your website’s content, code, and design should be focused on driving traffic from specific keywords. Keywords are terms or phrases that are relevant to your business and your customers. Unfortunately, you can’t simply type a few keywords in your HTML code and expect to rank well in Google, Yahoo!, and Bing. Keywords must be relevant to the content on each page.
The single most important factor in search engine rankings is site popularity. Popularity is measured in “backlinks”. A backlink is acquired every time a different site on the Internet links to one of your pages. Directories, blogs, social networks, article aggregators, and partner businesses are all fantastic sources of backlinks to boost the popularity of your website.
